Gary Kirsten Cricket is swiftly extending its reach to all parts of the country.

In January, Kirsten, Ryan Cook and Ryan van Niekerk ran a coaching workshop with 20 coaches from four Curro’s school’s at the Waterstone College.

This engagement was part of the ongoing relationship between the GKC and the Curro School group. The day was divided into two sessions where Kirsten and his team delivered theory and practical workshops. Session one covered coaching education and what is required and different schools. While the second session was a practical one which took place in the indoor centre. Here coaches were put through batting, bowling and fielding drills.

“We gave the coaches a look into how we do things at GKC,” van Niekerk said.

“It was highly beneficial. There were lots of questions, interesting debates and we are hoping to do more work like this in the Johannesburg region,” he added.

The fruits of the GKC First Team to First Class Programme were on display at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Under-19 Cubs week held at Stellenbosch in January.

The tournament consists of 8 teams which includes South Africa’s six franchise sides as well as Zimbabwe U19 and the CSA U17 Invitational Team.

Johannesburg based players such as Josh Richards, Jacob Miltz, Mitchell Van Buuren had good performances at the week as well as Cobras representatives Gavin Kaplan, Ricky Vasconcelos, Jesse Christensen, Will Sendin and Daniel Moriarty.

“We have worked with all these players over the past few years and it is always great to track the progress,” Ryan Cook who was involved as coach of the CSA U17 outfit.

“The standard of cricket at the tournament was of a high quality and this makes the pipeline for South African cricket stronger. Watching players progress through a system from year to year is exciting especially those who you have worked alongside for many years,” he added.

We are proud to announce the stellar rise of two players from the GKC First Team to First Class Programme.

The programme helps young cricketers make the jump from amateur to professional cricket.

Ruan Haasbroek who joined our Johannesburg camp last year is our latest graduate.

The 19-year-old from Potchefstroom represented the SA Schools side last year and finally got his List-A debut in December when North West took on Western Province in Cape Town.

The right-handed batsman made 28 on debut and then went on to make a half century against Boland in his second game.

“Ruan’s progress just highlights the power of our programme. Well done to him. We wish him all the best,” Ryan Cook said.

Junaid Dawood is another graduate who joined the programme in 2015.

He made his debut for Eastern Province last October and has come on in leaps and bounds.

The 20-year-old took 13 wickets in List-A game against Namibia in Windhoek in January.

“It is an excellent effort for a guy who has limited experience. He is making some great contributions,” Cook added.
