Kirsten and Cook head to India for High Performance Coaching Clinic

Gary Kirsten is set to return to India for the second time in three months for a 5-day coaching clinic in India.

The well recognisable and renowned figure after winning the ICC World Cup with India in 2011 enjoys working on the sub-continent with passionate young cricketers.

He will head over with Ryan Cook, Director of the High Performance progamme at the Gary Kirsten Academy.

The pair will work together with 30 players aged between 14-20 from the Saldanha Cricket Academy.

”It is brilliant to go out there and see how much these players love the game. We will be running an intensive programme which includes morning and afternoon sessions,” Cook explained.

It also gives Kirsten and Cook a chance to share their knowledge on the game with other coaches.

”There will be a coach the coaches session. It is about sharing ideas. We learn a lot every time we go to India. It is fascinating to see how they approach the game and how they think compared to South Africans cricketers,” Cook said.

”It is also great to see how Indian players approach spin. It is aggressive and South African players can learn a lot from them, ” Cook concluded.

Hosting Julian Wood Academy

It was great to connect again with the Julian Wood academy on Friday. This is the second clinic we have done with them and the boys were put through a full day with the GKC team at Constantia. All the bases were covered during the day and every player also had an opportunity to work with Gary which was a real highlight for them. We look forward to seeing them again next year!

GKCA Private Coaching: Pathway to success

Reaching ones true cricketing potential requires years of hard work, determination and bags of mental strength.

While natural ability is vital in the ever changing game, preparation, mentorship and good coaching will undoubtedly serve any player hoping to rise to the top.

The Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy’s high performance, private coaching programme gives young players the opportunity to raise the level of their game in all departments.

Ryan Cook, High Performance Director at the GKCA has first hand, seen the marked improvement of players who take up private coaching.

At present the GKCA has over 100 players in the programme.

“The GKCA has the expertise and resources to help players of all abilities. We work on technique and honing specific skills,” Cook said.

One of the key areas of private coaching is the one-on-one attention given to players.

“We look at players individually. Take them through intense net sessions where a batsman can face up to 300 balls,” Cook said.

He continued, “This gives our players a chance to work on their problem areas. It is about repetition and creating consistency. At school level players may only get 50 balls in the net, so it becomes a challenge to rectify a mistake.”

The private coaching pathway does not seek to compete with what players are doing during a school practice session.

“We want to work hand in hand with school coaches. The more knowledge we have on a player the better. We are looking for an integrated approach,” Cook explained.

At present some of the best Western Province age group batsmen have taken up private coaching at the GKCA.

“It is something that works and the results are there to be seen on the cricket field,” Cook said.

Private coaching at the GKCA is available throughout the year for players of all age groups.

Gary Kirsten kicks off Langa coaching

Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy has recently got involved with cricket in Langa. Gary identified an opportunity with Thami Tsolekile, to get involved in coaching at Langa and start making a difference with the abundance of talent that is available in these areas.

Always learning

Gary has said, “It was great doing some coaching out at Langa Cricket Club last week. I was impressed with the players we worked with, they have great potential to go further in their cricket careers. I look forward to continuing our work and helping some of these young players reach their dreams.”

So much talent

We as an Academy, look forward to working more with the boys and creating some superstars down the line. The academy is coaching at Langa once a week and ecourage players to come down and experience sessions and learn from the best.
