The popular project was staged at four venues during the third term vacation and attracted a record number of youngsters.

Over 40 players attended clinics hosted in Century City, Parklands College, Kenridge Primary School and Curro Hermanus.

The three-day programme which catered for junior and senior players focused on a myriad of coaching drills.

“We had two coaches at every venue and it was great to see experienced guys like Ryan Van Niekerk and Ryan Cook get involved as well,” GKC Coach Garreth Van Hoesselin said.

“A lot of boys were new to the programme and that is great as it introduces players to GKC and grows our talent pool,” he added.

The small numbers at each venue allowed coaches to pay individual attention and get the most out of the players in a short space of time.

“It really gave us the opportunity to work on attention to detail. We put them through some hand-eye coordination drills and also gave them time in the nets for bowling and batting practice,” Van Hoesselin said.

“The feedback from players and parents has been phenomenal. This is a project which is growing at a rapid rate and it is something we are looking forward to running again in December and January,” he concluded.

GKC has been based at Curro Hermanus since January this year with numbers in the private coaching space continuously growing at the school.

Over fifty kids attended the free coaching session between the age of 8-13 with Gary Kirsten hosting the much anticipated talk to a dedicated group of parents.

At Parklands College, 70 youngsters were divided into five groups where they received coaching in various aspects of the game.

“We had five coaches at different stations. We focused on target bowling and throwing, speed gun bowling, power throwing and lots of net sessions,” GKC Coach Garreth Van Hoesselin said.

“The response was fantastic at both schools and it was good to see an encouraging number of girls attend as well. There is great potential among these youngsters and we cannot wait to continue our work with them,” he added.

Gary Kirsten will host a ‘Parent in Sport’ evening at Curro Hermanus on 31 August (6pm) to shed light on the influence parents have on their kids.

The event is free and is a continuation of the work done by Gary Kirsten Cricket (GKC) at the school over the past year. Players interested in private coaching in the Overberg region are welcome to attend.

GKC is now permanently based at the school and offers private and group coaching to enthusiastic young cricketers.

“The evening will offer insights into the challenges that coaches, players and parents face in the current school sports environment. It is demanding on youngsters and they need as much support as they can get,” Kirsten said.

Before the event, GKC will conduct a free coaching clinic from 3-5pm at the school.

“We are excited to continue the work being done in the Overberg region. It is wonderful to be working with the Curro School group and some of their players,” Kirsten concluded.

With a number of promising young players in the region, GKC ran two high intensity holiday clinics during December and January.

Under the guidance of GKC Coach, Bradley Moses, 30 players between the ages of 8-13 got their first taste of private cricket coaching.

With a dire lack of high performance coaching in the Overberg region in the Western Cape, GKC is looking forward to establishing a central hub at the school.

“We know that there is huge potential in the area. Our first two clinics created interest and introduced youngsters to professional coaching,” Ryan van Niekerk, GKC Coaching Director said.

The project will be managed by GKC coach, Garreth Von Hoesslin. While Moses, a former provincial cricketer and CSA Level 2 coach will mentor the youngsters.

“We cater for kids of all abilities. From beginners to more established players. We are confident that a lot of these youngsters can go on to play junior provincial cricket,” van Niekerk said.

Now that a relationship has been established, GKC plan on hosting many more clinics during the course of the year.

GKC has some major plans both locally and internationally in 2017.

Most of all we are looking forward to once again mentoring and improving the skills of some of the most promising young cricketers.

In 2016 the GKC enjoyed coaching trips to the likes of India and Mauritius.

Kirsten revealed that there will be more of the same in the coming year as well as many other exciting developments.

“It is a big year for GKC with a lot on the go globally. Hopefully quite a few camps around the world and obviously running here in South Africa itself,” Kirsten said.

The GKC continued its rich tradition of hosting camps during the school holidays to aspirant cricketers in the Western Cape.

High Performance Academy

The second leg of the GKC High Performance programme got underway this week with player’s eager to get stuck in once again.

The four-month-long programme has attracted players from around the world and is led by GKC Head Coach, Ryan Cook.

It offers exclusive interactions with Kirsten and other top coaches as well as one-on-ones with world renowned professionals from a variety of different backgrounds.
