Kirsten was especially pleased to see the likes of Quinton De Kock, Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma and Kyle Abbott rise to the occasion Down Under.

“It is very exciting to see what the team has been able to achieve. I think the junior players have shown that they are worthy of their place in the side. They have adapted quickly and contributed to the team well,” Kirsten said.

Kirsten believes the team is in a good place and that the quality in squad depth is encouraging.

“With Dale Steyn and AB De Villiers out through injury this team showed they can step up. There is real competition and guys are showing they are willing to fight for their place,” Kirsten said.

“They put the Australians under a lot of pressure. Sometimes teams play in such a way that they do not allow the opposition to execute their game plan,” he added.

De Villiers’ unavailability due to an elbow injury would have been a real concern for the selectors before the tour got underway but they found an able skipper in Faf Du Plessis.

“Faf has done a great job. He has shown that he is a capable leader and that he can step in and do the job,” Kirsten said.

The contest now moves to Adelaide with the Proteas eager to claim a series whitewash of the old enemy.

The game which gets underway on 24 November is a day/night test, a first time experience for the Proteas.

“Australia will say to themselves that they need to get going and can’t keep losing games. I think they have some challenges with inexperience. The Proteas meanwhile will be angling to close up the series, that will be something special, Kirsten concluded.

Over the next 6 months, working with Head Coach Ryan Cook, Damien took his game to new heights. He has an unbelievable work ethic and drive to be the best possible cricketer he can. Working on all aspects of his game, he turned himself into a genuine all-rounder and started to perform consistently.

All the hard work came together at the end of the 2014/2015 cricket season, when Damien went on tour to Sri Lanka. He ended up Man of the Series after consistent performances throughout the tournament with bat and ball and showed how a little bit of belief and a lot of hard work can take you places.

Head Coach Ryan Cook is excited to continue his work with Damien and believes that with the right attitude, the sky is the limit. Gary Kirsten Academy would like to congratulate Damien on his great results of late and hopefully we can assist in some small way in shaping the way forward.

We have also had Tom Curren (son of the late Kevin Curren), James Burke, Aneesh Kapil and Harun Harinath from Surrey County Cricket Club training with us. Graeme Ford, head coach of Surrey has sent the boys to do some work in Cape Town with Gary and there is some huge potential coming through the ranks.

James Price from the Warriors in Port Elizabeth has also been back for some fine tuning to his game and trust that the new year will bring some more runs after a promising start to his season.

Gary is also currently doing some work with 2 other county players in Dawid Malan and Nic Compton of Middelsex. Both players are really hoping for a big start to the English summer and hopefully push for higher honors once again.
