11 weeks ago, GKC partnered with Grassroots Sports in India as we look to expand GKC operations globally. It has been an exciting journey so far in a country with so much passion for cricket as we aim to provide a platform for all players to take their games up a level through high quality coaching.

It started with team GKCI running 5 talent hunts around India in the cities of Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Pune. Over 1500 players attended the camps in all cities with more than 5000 online registrations and it was amazing to see the talent that was on show. Each player got an opportunity to showcase their skills in all the disciplines including a variety of batting, bowling and fielding tasks. This enabled us to unearth some exciting raw talent. Six players were selected from each city who will join us for a 3 day residential camp in Pune in September.

Once the Talent hunts were completed, the GKCI team launched a 14 day PowerPlayer camp in Pune. We had 40 players sign up for the program which provided great exposure to the players in understanding exactly what the GKC brand is all about. It was a camp that encompassed why we play the sport and included batting, bowling, fielding, fitness, assessments, lectures on nutrition and biomechanics as well as life skills. The feedback was brilliant from all who attended and momentum is building nicely toward the launch of the new state of the art GKCI facility.

Over the next few months, Team GKCI will start to focus on creating further awareness across India regarding our Pune operation. This unique facility will allow our team to share every cricketing experience imaginable with players both locally and internationally.

GKC has some major plans both locally and internationally in 2017.

Most of all we are looking forward to once again mentoring and improving the skills of some of the most promising young cricketers.

In 2016 the GKC enjoyed coaching trips to the likes of India and Mauritius.

Kirsten revealed that there will be more of the same in the coming year as well as many other exciting developments.

“It is a big year for GKC with a lot on the go globally. Hopefully quite a few camps around the world and obviously running here in South Africa itself,” Kirsten said.

2016/17 Summer Holiday Camps

The GKC continued its rich tradition of hosting camps during the school holidays to aspirant cricketers in the Western Cape.

“We had a great turnout during December and January especially with our Curro Hermanus clinic,”GKC Coach, Garreth von Hoesslin said.

“The coaches delivered quality programs for the cricketers. The feedback from the parents, boys and girls was exceptional and we had a lot of kids return to our January clinics from December. The clinics are there for players to ask questions and find out more about the game and their ability,” he explained.

The GKC will host their next open camp during the March and April Holidays.

High Performance Academy

The second leg of the GKC High Performance programme got underway this week with player’s eager to get stuck in once again.

The four-month-long programme has attracted players from around the world and is led by GKC Head Coach, Ryan Cook.

It offers exclusive interactions with Kirsten and other top coaches as well as one-on-ones with world renowned professionals from a variety of different backgrounds.

The duo conducted a five-day High Performance Camp with 40 players between the ages of 13-21.

“Through the duration of the camp held at the Police Gymkhana ground on the famous Marine Drive the players were provided with interventions to help their individual games as well as how to interact as a team,” Cook explained.

Using video analysis, each player was given a detailed run down of their strengths and which areas to improve on.

After spending many hours toiling in the nets, players took to the field on the last day to showcase their skills.

“There is no shortage of talent with these young players as both batters and bowlers impressed with their variety of skills and tactical awareness,” Cook concluded.

The well recognisable and renowned figure after winning the ICC World Cup with India in 2011 enjoys working on the sub-continent with passionate young cricketers.

He will head over with Ryan Cook, Director of the High Performance progamme at the Gary Kirsten Academy.

The pair will work together with 30 players aged between 14-20 from the Saldanha Cricket Academy.

”It is brilliant to go out there and see how much these players love the game. We will be running an intensive programme which includes morning and afternoon sessions,” Cook explained.

It also gives Kirsten and Cook a chance to share their knowledge on the game with other coaches.

”There will be a coach the coaches session. It is about sharing ideas. We learn a lot every time we go to India. It is fascinating to see how they approach the game and how they think compared to South Africans cricketers,” Cook said.

”It is also great to see how Indian players approach spin. It is aggressive and South African players can learn a lot from them, ” Cook concluded.
